Chongming Eco-Village

windmill UTIER is working with the leadership of Qianwei village to develop a model demonstrating that development of renewable energy plays a key role in sustainable economic development. Qianwei is a small agricultural village on Chongming island that sees green agriculture as a way to preserve their environment and improve their standard of living. The Chinese Central Government has designated Chongming Island as an “eco-city” and it is zoned for “eco-agricultural development.” It is one of the few fertile areas of China free from industrial pollution. 30 years ago the Chinese government gave this land to individual farmers and many families began to use pesticides and fertilizer to increase productivity, however, this also caused environmental problems. The village will use organic fertilizers and implement sustainable agriculture practices to help reverse the trend of environmental degradation. The village is also working to reduce its carbon emissions by using solar energy, wind and biogas to generate electricity.

International collaboration is key for the successful execution of UTIER's projects on Chongming Island. UTIER will complete the projects and expand the technology demonstration to other newly identified clean technologies. We believe that the Western States and the Chongming Renewable Energy Zone could partner in the demonstration project through technology transfer and commercialization to promote the renewable energy that will provide economic development for the Western States and a more environmentally advanced community in the Yangtze River Delta Region.
